Thats a fantastic picture, nice work Demat and TG.

Its a little like a "Who" version of where's Wally!

I've more or less got the final details on my Sketch-up complete, so as promised, I'll e-mail you the master copy thing. Sorry for the delay.

Thanks guys :) Looks like TG is away for the moment, so thanks on her behalf as well - I'm sure she'll jump into the thread herself soon :)

By the time you read this, the sketch-up model should have arrived in your in-box.

It's taking it's time (I'm on dial up!), but I'm sure it'll get there!

Didn’t Demat do a Fab job with the picture!

He turned a few 3D models into a whole story – he should take the credit

I loved the addition of the Master and his TARDIS

It’s my desktop image now too

Hi Chris,

It's been ages since you posted any details about your build. Is it still progressing, or has your carpenter gone AWOL?

Hi Colin

Yes - it pretty much has come to a standstill. The carpenter hasn't quite gone AWOL, but something inbetween (he's training up for an alternative career at the same time - something he didn't mention when he took on the job..., and I think he's badly underestimated the amount of time and effort his courses take). Despite this, I've managed to lock him down to end of august for a 99% complete box (i.e: something that can be built and painted, minus some small details like the lamp housing) - he's on holiday in august so he's keen to get it done before then.
I have to say I'm not that optimistic, but if there is progress in the coming months I'm meant to be hearing from him so I can go and take more photos etc.
Needless to say - if it gets to august and nothings happened it's time to take the parts he has done and call it a day I think.

wish me luck! ;)

cheers

Hi Chris
Thanks for the kind words. And asking my advice wow!. Yes I did try to bevel the pitch roof bottom edge but ended up filling the little triangle as well. This will I think help seal this vulnerable joint. A lot of sanding as I've said but I'm sure worth the effort. I am going to use TG's black goo on all upper horizontal surfaces as KB tardis must live outside I'm afraid.
I must admit to only today backtracking your thread and a fine job you're doing as well. I like the electrics plan especially.
I hope "Dr. Smith" isn't giving you Mrs Demat too many sleepless nights. Many thanks

Hi KB

thanks for the compliments, and for explaining how your roof is done. :)
Mine will have to live outside as well, but thankfully the build has a few details in it to keeps the rain out (and stop it from creeping through gaps and joints through capillary action); But, I think it's only going to be as good as the paint job in the end; some decent undercoat, TG's black goo™ and good exterior paint (and some silicone sealant here and there).

Dr Smith is fine thanks, no trouble (yet) - although I'm sure he'll soon be breaking things and then claiming it wasn't him (his only, short-lived, Dr. Smith trait - I hope...) ;)

cheers

Your TARDIS looks great Demat :D So much further on with the build!
That wood for the doors has a lovely chamfer - and a rebate for the panels!! I’m impressed.

Hopefully not too long until it will be home with you

Demat, Looks really good, nice to see these progress shots.
From a woodworking point of view this is becoming a candidate for the most professional build yet! Rebate for the panels etc. a really nice touch. Looks like he has done a lot of the really hard work so hopefully assembly of all the wall pieces shouldn't take too long. It's good to see your virtual TARDIS design take shape, isn't it..?

yes - and I couldnt resist trying to map my 3d version over the top of the photo:

Ghost of a Tardis

It's not looking quite right because there's some camera distortion, plus the posts were not actually fixed to the base and the roof was only screwed into position as the supports aren't in yet (and of course there are no walls) so the posts looks a tad out of alignment. But I'm sure it'll all come good! :D

cheers

Its coming along great, I love watching the progress on your box. Are you going to do the finish work yourself? such as signs and painting or is he going to do that as well?

Chris,

I am checking in on your build. It looks like it's coming along great.
I just finished my post for my build. I did the same exact thing as you did, just putting the corner posts on the base to see how it looks. I am eager to see how your build progresses.

I agree with TG, the chamfer looks great and what is a rebate for the panels? I am not a wood worker, is your carpenter/cabinet maker giving you some money back on making your panels? LOL! :)
Seriously, I am not sure what a rebate is, please let me know.

Anyway, I'll keep watching for more pics as you go. So far, it's looking great.

Hi Karst and Jon

Thanks for the compliments :-)

Although I'm not actually constructing the thing myself, I have found that there's been plenty to do to make sure it goes ok... but Yes - I'm doing all of the undercoating, painting and signage myself, as well as the electrics and lighting of course. I'm really looking forward to doing a weathered paint job on it too :D And then there's the concrete base to lay with the electrics running through (it's going to live outside)

Rebate :-) Sorry, I'm not a woodworker either so I've probably got the wrong word there - but I mean the right-angled groove cut into the wood behind the chamfer which will take the panel when it's assembled.

Anyway, thanks for the well-wishes on the build - I hope to be posting photos of the roof when it's done (fingers crossed) in a couple of weeks. And then it's paint-test time ;D)

cheers
Chris

Nice looking Box Chris.

As far as my full size box goes, all I have is the concrete 'foundations'!

Don't know if its any use to you, but when I layed the concrete, I put some copper pipe (the sort used for water pipes in houses) in a L shape into the concrete with the top part protruding through the base (ultimately inside the box) with some string pre-fed inside.

At a later stage I'll be able attach the power and phone cable to the string and feed them into the box through the foundations with no trouble at all!

I also ran the copper pipe all the way up the garden (my garden was a mess so a few trenches made no odds!), so as to offer some protecting to the cables, and myself should I be digging and forget!

Hi again Mark

Hope you're well and that model of yours is coming along - it's looking superb.

Thanks for the tips and advice about the concrete base; The string - now there's something I would definitely have thought about after burying the pipe :P

Just out of interest, what kind of mix did you do for the concrete? (parts water, sand etc?). I'm always worried that after a year or three the thing will crack up if I havent got the right mixture. And how deep did you dig the space for yours?

cheers
Chris

Hello Chris,

The model is coming along (slowly) and I'm pretty happy with it too :)

As for the full size one, I made the concrete to the follwing specifications:-

1 part - Ordinary Portland Cement
2 1/2 parts - Coarse aggregate
1 1/2 parts - Sharp sand

This mix is intended for making stuff like steps, drives and paths, but is better if exposed to rain etc., than normal shed/garage foundation mix.

Depending on how firm the ground is that you intend to put the foundations on, you may need to lay a Hardcore layer to add stability.

I dug down about two feet (by hand, no machines here! ::)), making the actual foundation layer of concrete about 20 inch deep. The reason I dug 2 feet was so that I could lower the eventual height of the box so it wouldn't protrude too much above the garden privet ;D

Hi Mark

Thanks for the details on the conrete etc (sorry for the late reply - I've been away to Cornwall on holiday - the Eden Project would make a superb location for a DW episode.. :D)

And thanks for the tip on the foundation - our garden has very good soil, but when it's wet you can compress it with a loaded wheelbarrow, so I'll definitely do that. I want my Tardis to appear level on a slight slope so I'll need to dig deep at some point anyway.

Hope the model's still progressing well!

cheers

That's great you've finally got a piece of your box to start work on. It looks great.

That's a lot of painting you've got ahead of you! But it will be worth it in the long run the wood should be werll protected after all that. Get some mates round to give you a hand!

Quote:
Overcoat (depending on my paint tests) with Weathershield Textured paint.

I saw this in my hardware store and thought about buying it. It sounds ideal for Tardis building. In the end my box was fairly textured anyway so I went with untextured paint but I'll be interested in how you get on with this paint.

What a lovely roof Demat!!! You must be very happy with that!
And it’s even lovely on the inside!

Hey ,what an impressive painting schedule you’ve set yourself :o You’re clearly anticipating the effects of; global warming, a new ice age, rising sea levels (actually I shouldn’t mention that as you’re in Lincolnshire) and Zachary in a few years time with a cricket bat ;)

Chris, your roof is very nice! I like the wider middle step!
I have been debating about doing three or two steps personally.
I can't wait to see some primer, undercoat and paint on your build.
Progress my man, progress. It's great to see thing coming together nicely for you.

Thanks for the comments on my thread. Yes, I really enjoy working with my son Jacob. Enjoy this time with your son, before you know it, he'll be giving you a hard time on building him a TARDIS.
Kids, they grow like weeds.

Oh, you said something about your fresnel being the same diameter as the height. Just out of curosity, were did you get your lens at?

Have a good one!

Nice work mate, that roof is looking very nice.

As far as the foundations go, that was just the way I made mine, hopefully it should behave and last quite a long time but for peice of mind you may fancy doing a quick google search on foundations - just so you are happy.

Hi Mark, thanks. I'll definitely double check the plan for the foundations - I need to look into it quite carefully anyway because I need to plan a fairly complicated run for the electrics - it's going uphill a bit from my house, and has to negotiate a few obstacles on it's way..

cheers

Cheers Chris.

If you do go for the coper pipe method, a cheap pipe bending device is a Godsend. You can use it to create almost any angle of curve you may need for the pipe.

Thanks Mark - I'll definitely plan to get one of those if I go the pipe route; I was speaking to someone the other day who had done something similar with the power to his shed - except he'd used some armoured cable which you can't put a spade through. I think it might be expensive though... but it would avoid all the twists and turns I'd have to do with pipe if I could afford it!

cheers
