Interior Builds

If you build a TARDIS console, this is the place to chart your progress and show us what you're doing. We love pictures... Once you're finished, make a thread over in the Interior Gallery board, and put up some nice photos of your completed console.

How about laminating some wire?

What is it we're looking for? Is that a general help capture or something specific?

-Marc

Hi Marc,

I just thought it showed the sheathed switch lever quite well. Yea...the other one looks like a band-aid job!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I seem to have found a solution that works. I've used a mini toggle switch with three positions and inserted it through the back of the switch body. The switch is made from two pieces of aluminium tube glued together, and the knob from a wooden bead. The advantage of this is that they'll actually work.

The switch shaft is superglued over the mini-toggle. I was worried that this wouldn't be strong enough, but when trying to dismantle the prototype to make the proper switches, I couldn't, so it seems like it might be strong enough after all!

This is the bank of five I'm currently making, mocked-up on their little plinth. Small amount of filling has been done, and all the switch bodies made. Ready for painting, and the insertion of the toggles.

You can see a little of where I'm up to with the rest of this panel. There's a prototype light there, made from a ping-pong ball and a disc of MDF (not sure about the disc - too thick); and a bakelite knob I've got from Ebay for the big slider.

I've also picked up a spot-on voltmeter for one of the other panels. Only three more to go...! :P

I'm concentrating on this one panel at the moment (and maybe the rotor/column as well). My first goal is to complete this bank of five switches.

That bakelite knob is perfect!!!

The light... wasn't it a pearly finish bulb painted half grey? (Though I'm sure a half painted ping pong ball will be much more user friendly in the long run :)

Those control switches are really looking the part now :)

Okay - getting the ball rolling now...!

Finished the painting over the weekend. Here's the stuff in the garden having a final dry in the open air.

And here's the parts layed out on their panel - before inserting the switches to fix it all together. I've also made that thin strip that sits in front of the bank of switches on this panel.

As you can see, I've added the little red dots in front of the switch-slots.

Getting picky now, though... I've tried a slightly smaller lever ball, and it looks better, so I might have to swap them - more filling, sanding and painting. ::) Also, not sure about the adhesive stickers for the red dots. I think the originals were smaller, and dotted on with red paint, so I might have to fix this too.

Still have to fix this panel together properly - drilling holes for the toggle switches, etc.. In the picture above, it's just balanced together.

Getting some aluminium mesh today for this panel's speaker grill, and I also want to make a start on the big lever, especially as I have the bakelite handle.

Marc - I'm still not sure about the ping-pong balls. I don't think they're actually bulbs, as they're a fairly matte sheen, and don't look like glass at all. I'm wondering if they're eggcup inserts as were used for the Chase to Evil dalek dome lights. Ping pong balls seem to be about the right size. I am having trouble with the surrounds for the lights, though. They need to be 2.5 inches diameter and about 3mm thick. Any ideas, anyone?

Are you sure your name isn't really Peter Brachacki? Are you equally sure you don't have a time machine to go build this back in 1963??!!?

Looking good dude! Looking VERY good!

Hey Celation!

Thanks for the feedback on my console! May I take this chance to say "WOW!!!" I'm so impressed by the attention to detail you've shown so far! What a huge inspiration! Looking forward to seeing more...

Thanks for all the encouragement, folks!

I haven't been idle - the switch panel is complete, with (working) three-position toggle switches incorporated into each lever. For future reference, toggle switches plus dripping superglue don't mix! :)

I've made an "audio unit" speaker to go above this panel - built from foamboard and aluminium mesh - not the most solid construction, but it will do for the moment.

I'm now working on the dematerialiser sliding control thingy - the big grey lever beneath the switch panel. Whoever's been singing the praises of paper templates, they're absolutely right.
I've just made the main body of it, without the surround at the moment, and it looks good so far. Unfortunately, I've now gone back to the reference, and realised that the slot reaches too far to the ends of the block, so I'm going to have to modify it slightly by wedging some more wood in. Quite annoying.

Pictures will follow...

You know, every once in a while I'll notice a thread and wonder how on Earth I missed it and this is one of those threads.

Looking back, I'm well impressed with the work on the central rotor (or whatever you want to call it) and the levers look pretty smart too. I must admit, this is a prop that I'm not that well versed in as it's my least favourite model, but you've replicated the parts so well. It's look terribly fiddly and I don't envy the work ahead of you.

I'll be sure to keep an eye out on this thread.

Thanks, Purple - much appreciated. And Happy Birthday!

Here's that picture I promised...

Of course, with these things being working switches, they tend to have a load of gubbins sticking out of the back now - particularly this demat lever. Hence wedging it in the workmate to see what it looked like. The lever block needs the surround yet, of course.

You can see the completed block of five switches, which are now able to be moved, and the stickers have been replaced with small blobs of red paint. I'm thinking about blacking up the cavities of the switches to make them look a little more weathered (as is popular in the Police Box thread, I read!).

Not sure how much time I'm going to get on it this week. Busy time at work. We'll see.

Thanks! Sure Marc - the smaller levers?

I've got some snaps of the switch construction I can upload tonight.

Actually managed a little more last night - shortened the slot in the large lever slightly. I wasn't looking at my reference properly... :)

Heh heh!

Well, here's how the demat lever box was constructed - fairly rough'n'ready:

And here's a couple of images of the levers to show how the toggle switch was integrated:

A lot of nice work there. Were you aware, though, that the casings for the levers and switches were actually hollow and not solid? Still, your method would mean they are stronger.

I watched Edge of Destruction last night and it has some closeups of of the panel you are making. You can see the lip/thickness of the material on the inside of the switches casings. The rest of the inside is hollow-looking.

Not sure where you're coming from with this one Bill... I just had a quick look through my grabs from EoD (about a hundred) and can't see it... I think they were just painted black on the inside.

Could you post a grab where you saw it?

I agree that the large levers do look somewhat as if they're cast from GRP or similar. It seems to have a lip around the inside of the slot.

Mind you, Marc might be right - it could just be painted from what I've seen. Difficult to tell.

I'd like to see some caps too, if possible Bill.
