After I saw Handofomega's thread "what I have been doing for a week", I downloaded google sketchup and started to play around with my own ideas. The primary console room is inspired by parts of the tardis as seen in Logopolis. I've always liked the Idea of a stone console room, so I created one. This is a work in progress and is ever evolving. It is also my first attempt at 3-d modeling.

Thanks to purple and exilea for helping me with image resizing(sorry about the huge pics!)

and a special thanks to Handofomega for introducing me to this cool program! My attempts aren't that good, but it has been a lot of fun drawing this stuff.

You have to tell me how you made backgroungs for your Police Box and I REALLY want to know how you made that hat tree????

I absolutely LOVE your console concept!!!! I love the feeling of consoles of the past in it and the panals on the base!!! I also love the stone console room!!!! I also love the entry way to the exterior.

I can't wait to see more!!!!

Thank you. This mean a lot from you, as I adore your sketches. Your stuff is VERY original. The background for the police box is simply the outside of the wall painted. The tree and the doctors and bookshelf and speakers and coat tree were imported. There is an icon at the top that looks like a cardboard box. I think it says "get models". You can find all sorts of stuff to put into your sketches. The Hartnell console is my favorite, so this is sort of based on it. I am about to post more pics including a console in the back that is sort of based on the new series. Also, I've got a seperate police box. All this in a few moments.

More from the back of the TARDIS, starting with the overhead shot requested by exilea. And the secondary console is a combination of Hartnell and tennant. The walls of the secondary console room are inspired by the Paradox Tardis from "The Sound of Drums".

I had a 2D image of the sign for the sign boxes and the phone door. I went under File and clicked import. I went to the folder I had the image under and then clicked on it. Then I went to the surface I wanted to put the image on (i.e. the sign area) and clicked on it. Then I was able to enlarge the 2D image until it was the size I needed. I also was able to move the image with the move function to move it into place where I wanted it.

Hope that is clear. ;D

DUDE!!!! :o :o :o

Where did you get the textures????? Specifically where did ya get the circuitry texture??? And where did ya get the MESH texture???? I had to use diamond plate on the floor of the console area because there was no mesh texture. This is some of the most AWESOME stuff I have seen sir!!!! Frankly I love what you have done here!!!! and possibly a wee bit jealous. But in a good way ;D

Did you create the roundel texture you put on the walls??? Tell me all about it. ;D

O.K., here we go. When you import models they become patterns in the paint function. So if I wanted to, I could paint the tardis walls with Tom Baker's head! I imported a 3-d model that someone else did of the paradox tardis. I then erased it and used the textures in my sketch. Their model was on a larger scale than mine, that is why the roundels are so large in the back room. The mesh was already there (listed under FENCING), and I just recolored it. I also searched for computers, circuitry, computer chips and various other things that I could use for painting and then erased the objects. Everything you import is added to your paint palette. So I didn't use other people's drawings, I just lifted the paint. Go searching for console rooms. You can find various versions of the new series stuff as well as old stuff. I also got some of the switches and the laptop computer on my primary console this way. Hope this helps. In order to access these colors in your paint palette, when you click on the paint bucket and the paint window comes up there is an icon in the paint window that looks like a house. click it and you will find these patterns along with the blue wood that you have already edited for your police box exterior(which, by the way - your police box looks fantastic!) If any of this is unclear, or if it doesn't work out for you, get back to me and I'll look back into it. Happy hunting!

edit: After thinking about it for a while, I remembered that a lot of that circuitry came from the paradox tardis

Hi Willytron

Wow - you've been doing some serious sketchuping!! :D I love this software too, I found it very useful and quick and easy to pick up.

I like your console pics a lot - although I have a quick tip that might make them look a little more naturalistic: remove or recolour the black edging. Sketchup adds these by default but you can modify or remove them to your own taste (of course, if you like black lines then just tell me where to go..! ;) )

Here's a quick example:

Just in case you haven't found it yet, here's how to remove it (but you can only do this for all or none, not individual objects unfortunately):
Window>Styles>
then in the pop up window, select 'edit', then the 'edges' icon, then just untick 'display edges' and any/all of the options below it.
If you want to keep outlines, you can make the colour of them more closely related to the object you can keep edges selected and then just select a better colour from the box at the bottom (or just choose 'by material' which seems to do a good job automatically.

Have you tried experimenting with lighting options and shadows? I find that to get the most natural look, without outlines, is to have some shadows going on.

I hope that's handy, it's personal preference at the end of the day - but nice to have the options. Happy console building! It's looking fantastic.

cheers
Chris

Thanks for the tip. I'll give that outline thing a try. I placed shadows and fog on my seperate police box, but I can't do so on the interior. The reason is that when I started, the first thing I drew was the top of the plinth. Then I drew the console and went out from there. That having been said, the top of the plinth is where the finished floor should be, so when shadows are applied it looks like the tardis is flooded waist deep in dark water! I'll have to try and reposition the whole thing.

I moved the model and erased the roof, then added some shadows.

I'm afraid that the total removal of lines don't work very well in this particular sketch.

Hi Willytron

For the models where your lighting can't actually get to the objects to provide shadows and shading (like that one of the corridor in particular) I think you need to have lines that match the colour scheme of the object to give it an edge (and that would probably suit all your other objects better than black lines too imho). Anyway, it looks like you're having a lot of fun with it!

cheers

The more I look at those red walls in the secondary control room, the less I like them. The pattern is cool - It just don't fit the old school tardis look that I am going for. I think that I may go with a wooden theme for that room, like season 14. I also think that it is time to add more rooms.

Not exactly accurate, but fun to draw.
Nevermind the fact that that door is probably too wide to actually close, and that the lock probably wouldn't line up.

I simply edited patterns to make them transluscent. Then I place transluscent tubes inside the one large transluscent tube of a slightly differnt color. Oddly enough, it just came out that way! ;D

Thanks very much. And by the way, I love what you've done with your console. All those controls are filling out quite nicely. I'll have to start throwing in more details soon, but I just had to do something about the big rectangular console room. Haven't decided yet if I want to go with a hexagon or a circle for the layout of the room, but the rectangle was all wrong.

the big difference in the blue one, aside from the color - is that the walls are round, as opposed to hexagonal. I really think I like it better that way.

Thanks. I started out attempting to sort of duplicate the nst, then i just started goofing around with the colors and came up with this. I REALLY like the look of it. the finished room will possibly look a lot like this. Before I decide, I'm gonna try nst patterns with old TARDIS colors. Not sure how this will all look in white, but I'm really leaning toward the blue. I love the darkness of it all.

Speaking of the "darkness of it all"... I think I might do my own version of the Master's TARDIS after I finish my version of the Doctor's. Looking at your dark colours in the TARDIS is a VERY inspiring sight. ;D
