Well if you saw Blink, you heard confirmation from a Police officer in the show that the TARDIS does not match up to a real police box. And there was a blooper. In the far away shot when we first see the TARDIS, the phone panel is open. But in the closeup shot, it's closed. Bill "the Doctor" Rudloff

Saw this on Whoniverse.org and thought I would share.
"If left in the same shape for several years a TARDIS could suffer from chameleonic fluctuation, which causes the exterior to slowly alter its exterior shape and color over time. Each alteration will be minor but the cumulative effect could be quite noticeable."
It effectively explains WHY the TARDIS looks similar to a Police Box but not quite the same as the old Met Boxes. Personally I like the explaination.

LOL. As soon as I heard that line I thought of this board. It almost seems a tribute to this place

I laughed out loud at this bit - genius! Clearly inserted for a bit of a good natured laugh at those of us who can be a bit special about the dimensions of the TARDIS - let's face it there was a huge outcry on boards like this when the first pictures of the new series box emerged and the odd complaint still surfaces every now and again.
I bet Russell T Davies put that line in, he's well aware of how crazy we can be about that box.
Funny story: My sister used to work as a freelance journalist and was at the second series launch, unbeknownst to me took a photo she had taken of me with the Crich box along for the crew and cast to sign ( best sister in the world!) . Russel T Davies had a good laugh at the picture "Oh look at the poor dear, he's so lost!"

They wrote some funny comments on it which you can just make out :
"MATT, Stand away from my Machine" - David Tennant "Are you pi**ing on our TARDIS?" - Billie Piper

Regarding the hilarious line about why the TARDIS changes over the years ... my theory is it's the same police box and has never changed at all, just like we accept Davros is the same, the Cyber Tombs were the same, the first Doctor in the 5 Doctors was the same, etc. LOL!!!
