Police Public Call Box

So, this is where the TARDIS design stemmed from; a piece of street furniture from way back when. Talk about them and post up your photos here.

Good lord, I've never seen anything quite like it. if someone built a TARDIS like that, I think someone would come up with a term on a par with woklek... lol

Interesting find! :)

The thing with that randomly-windowed box is that (as far as I can make out from the pictures) it's constructed in such a way that the side and back panels are interchangeable with those on the more Tardis-like boxes.

This makes me wonder whether the money boxes with plain sides and a Tardis-style front was based on a genuine example...?

It's just a mark 3 with a replacement door...I used to have a poorer pic of it on my site before I got these. Because for a while it was the only mk3 box I'd seen, I assumed that they all had this layout, the longer pane on the door. Of course, the door actually has no window whatsoever normally.
It's a shame the telephone panel is just glass. The only photo I've got of the heathrow box shows a blue panel with white text, just like the TYJ tardis, but it's too far away to see properly. I have a photo of the camden box, but I can't remember if I had it my site or not back in the day...it's a colour one of it spattered with mud. Do you guys have that one? Or shall I put it up?

Ah, yes, I realised that this door was anomalous - but what I meant was that because the entire front or side was interchangeable with that of a Mk 2, perhaps there were some police boxes that contained elements of both. This would explain the curious appearance of that money-box, if it was copied from a real hybrid box.

These 'Mk 3' things seem to have had a few variants - the Camden one looks like it had a white front sign possibly with simplified wording. The Heathrow had a blue sign as you say, and blue window frame, and just 'POLICE' on the side top sign. The Crossness one may have an extra-high telephone cupboard...?

Agreed - there are a few mk3 variants as with the mk2... it's a shame there aren't more photos - the heathrow box has a beacon like the mile end red box... It's possible the side panels were interchangable - -look at the cross ness box, the construction is clearly visible - the lintels are a top ring - one piece and the corner posts are, as we know, slotted to anchor the walls - with the holes cut for the lintel sign lighting. But why would they do it? Repair an exisitng box that had got too tatty? As you can see in 'bigger on the inside', they only come apart with a sledge hammer and by then you've demolished the box... It could be possible the manufacturer had some fronts left but only new sides I suppose... or maybe the money box manufacturers used mixed reference pics... it all depends which variation of the money box came first I guess?

My logic is that if they were redesigning the police box more economically, they needn't have made the sides quite as tall: but it looks as if they made them exactly the same size as the Mk 2 sides (it would be good if anyone connected with Hendon could confirm this...?) and the only reason that I can think of for doing this would be, as you say, to use up an abundant supply of Mk 2 fronts.

More pictures would be nice; I've almost grown to like the design. It's like the K8, it has its own simple logic - but it would be better if the front didn't look like the back!

Here are a couple of pictures from a book I got many years ago about trams. The first picture is from Forest Rise at Whipps Cross, also note the 2 K3 telephone boxes to the left of the 2 gentlemen at the left of the picture.

The second picture is from Govan in Glasgow but I thought in the main picture it was difficult to see the police box so i've also added a close up scan of the important bit.

Enjoy...

Another one from the tram book, not a tardis type police box but I like this picture anyway. Queens Road in Sheffield. The phone box behind it is the much rarer Mk2 K3, there's only one of these surviving and it's still working as the village phone box at Rhynd near Perth. Unless of course there's one hidden in a yard or something somewhere???

I do like those bow-top boxes.

Here's a Tardis in Little Bushey Lane (which does indeed look little and bushy):

Looks like a good pic for a recon of Reign of Terror, I can just see William Hartnell (or his double) walking along there :)

Looks like Lower Addiscombe Rd was a lovely place. I wonder what happened to the nice buildings.

Who was it who made an album called "Modern Life is Rubbish"?

LOL "Aptly named Blur" sounds a bit like "Badly Drawn Boy" haha

I think my point stands though. The town looked a lot nicer before those buildings got demolished... Was it a war time bombing that did it or some town modernising?

I've posted the old Addiscombe picture again because i've managed to get it without that pixelly pattern over it. I don't know why mine's better, the one that Dad posted was the same one emailed to him from my PC. Any ideas???

Nice - and you can see now that it has its St John plaque in the Mk 1 position.

That Penhall Road box - it looks like a wooden box but isn't the right-hand window open? - so it's a wooden box refitted with opening metal windows?

Wow Ironageman you must have that same software that they have in the movies - where they can take a still from an ancient corner shop CCTV video tape and then zoom in to be able to read the serial number on the fiver being handed over the counter ;)

Nice picture KB and Robertpunk!

The earlier version looks like it has a ‘Moire pattern’ - like you get if you scan a picture from a magazine or book?

Hi All
Now this is very interesting
This Police box is, or should I say was, at Carshalton

And so was this one

The picture that started this thread.
The mk I in the top pictures stood directly opposite the mk II, or didn't, if you follow
Incidently, it's a postcard I'm watching on ebay at the moment, found by Robert. A bit naughty to lift the pictures I know, but I do intend to bid on the item

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?V....ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=019
Many thanks

How interesting - so if I understand this correctly, they replaced the MK I with a MK II? I wonder why? The new improved version? Or maybe the positioning was in the way of progress so the old box which couldn't be moved as one had to be demolished and as they weren't making MK I anymore they had to replace it with a MK II on the opposite side of the road...
Funny how the mind wanders when unoccupied....

Right - update. There is nothing on the other side of the road in Carshalton so scratch that theory.
I have saved the location as a KMZ but I can't figure how to link to it on here

Hmm... curious... if they'd wanted to update it they'd presumably just have changed the signage and hey presto, a Mk 2. And it's a concrete Mk 1 so what could have happened to the thing that would have warranted its demolition?

Hi Guys
Sorry for the wait but things to do, anyway here goes;
From these two shots you can see there is no extra building or development to speak of in the mk1 site, save a little ground work

Indeed the kink in the kerbline remains.
I went into a small antique/collector's shop (Just out of shot) and spoke with two "Older" gentlemen and showed them my pictures. To my amazement they both remembered the mk1 more than the mk2 (Maybe their minds are confused) The shopkeeper claims to have a second postcard of the mk1 with a policeman. They told me that the mk1, originally, stood in front of a butcher's called Woodman's, and that the structure in front of the box formed part of the shop from which hung meat. In that spot now is a wine bar called "The Woodman".
Still awake?? Next stop the library next door. In it I found a pictorial book of Carshalton, so take a look at this;

From the text;;
Village policeman by the Church outside Woodman's butcher's shop. circa. 1920
I note the card reads Village police "station"

Best I can do for now

Nothing special, just a couple of shots of the box in Sheffield city centre from about 2 years ago (one of them wasn't even the subject of the photo), I thought I'd put them here in case they are of any interest...

Nice; the Sheffield style of box is rather fine.

Good work, that 'Kingbee; the mystery remains...

So, who's going to be the first to build a replica of one of those Edwardian ones? - and is Carshalton so trustworthy that they didn't need to bother with the door? or so dodgy that someone nicked it?

so the plot thickens eh...still no clser to an explanation as to why they replaced the MK 1 with a MK2.
Just one of those questions lost in time.....
