great! Good luck with it - any help just give me a shout , I'm no electronics expert, but glad to help where I can
cheers Chris
PS: not sure if it made any difference to my setup, but the little batteries that came with mine ran out because (I think..) I left the phone off the hook for 30 minutes.. I replaced them with 1.5volt batteries from Boots that are a tad thicker than the original 1.4volt ones but still fit in the compartment. They're still going strong and I've had no problems with the device.. (yet ) Mind you, I haven't left it off the hook again since the first time..

That sounds rather like guitar pedals. if you leave the jack cables plugged in either side, it completes the circuit (whether the footswitch is switched on or not) and the 9 volt batteries die pretty quickly...

Hi Marc, thanks for that, I had been wondering just how it happened because the sound chip doesn't need the circuit to be continually complete for the sound to play all of the way through, and if you do hold down the button it will still play the whole sound and then stop playing. So, I put it down to the fact that keeping the circuit complete by having the phone off the hook was still powering the system for sound, whether it played anything or not - like leaving the amp powered up, but with no source. But, that was just my guess... thanks to your guitar pedals example, I think I feel happier that this was the reason why, and not anything to do with running the sound board through clunky 60 year old technology
cheers Chris

Quote:Crispin - thanks a lot Coincidentally, I was admiring your Tardis again yesterday, in your 'Return of Scarfwearer' vid. How's she weathering just inside that barn? (assuming it's still in that position!) |
|
Having been outside all winter through driving rain, she's been doing remarkably well, given that she was never intended to be an outdoor box. The MDF seems to have been holding up OK mostly, I think, because of the 6 layers of paint and primer. And also because she's not actually had rain on top. We've had birds nesting in the barn and they've been decorating her somewhat in passing. I'm not sure whether to remove the evidence though, as it's very authentic... She's presently, uh, dematerialized however, pending arrival in her new home when it's ready...
Cheers Crispin

Hi Crispin
That's good to hear! Despite the birds and their 'texturing experiments' I think you've got the best of both worlds there - outside, but under shelter. But where is it moving to? Are you moving house again?

Chris,
I bet you can't wait to get this assembled and painted... The 'blue paint moment' is a wonderful time, it's almost majestic! When you get a chance could I see a couple views of your sign boxes as I am working on that aspect at the current time.
I agree with TG - a lovely TARDIS.
Cheers, Jon~

Thanks TG and Jon! Yes - it's been a long time coming, but at least it's in the right place to even stand a chance of reaching that 'blue paint moment' now I went to the DIY shop today and got some new supplies - sanding stuff, including a particulate mask - I hate sanding so I decided to get properly kitted-out instead of raiding my generally-knackered DIY supplies, just to minimise the pain
Jon, I'll get some photo's of my signboxes up asap (tomorrow I would think), but just so you know what to expect: the beading on my corner posts doesn't go behind where the signbox fits the post - I wanted to avoid trying to scribe and cut the bead profile out of the signbox.
cheers Chris

Well Chris, it's about time you finally got your TARDIS on site and ready for completion - I know you've waited a long time for this. In terms of the "Slow Builder" leader board, I think you're either 3rd or 4th. Can't remember now.
The slow aspect in all these slow builds is unique to pretty much all of us, bar one; the fact that the build in question and the builder were not in the same place. Karsten, you and me all have / had the TARDIS project quite some distance from where you live. Sorvan on the other hand has his on site, but he's been busy with other things. Tut, no excuse really! I can talk with the amount of unfinished projects that are only in the next room.

cheers Purple, you know it was a massive relief to rescue it and put it somewhere safe - the chap who owned the workshop is about to move to a remote Scottish island (no joke) and I was having visions of arriving to pick the thing up only to find an empty house!

Chris,
Very nice construction there mate! I am very like the quality here and need to go back to the drawing board with what I am doing. The concept is very similar, but the wood quality that I am using needs to be up graded. The problem with plywood it tends warp and separate. I only had one sign box made anyway. I have to also accommodate with that 'contour' guide you recommended for sparing my quarter round.
Thanks Chris!
Cheers
Edit: I just saw KB's comment on the anniversary special. I might just to fly over to England to co-star in it! KB always has a way with words. I couldn't agree more. Thanks KB!

Beautiful work there
I've always thought about doing a TYJ box (eventually) then toyed with the idea of a brachacki (I've fallen for that one too now) but then I realised I could do a TYJ with the old style sign boxes and STILL be accurate

WOW...that sign box looks wonderful! Nice construction work!! LOVE IT! There really needs to be(if there isn't already) a thread on sign boxes and different construction techniques of each...they seem to be the most difficult to understand in TARDIS rebuilding. Oh yeah, pictures help ALOT!

Thanks for the encouraging comments all
Good luck with your signboxes Jon! I agree with you about the plywood - perhaps marine ply would be better if you prefer working with plywood?
Marc, that's just the idea I had in mind for my build - I wanted the bits I like from TYJ and Newbery without the thing looking like a 'frankenstein's monster' of a Tardis at the end
Moonpie and Gemini - I agree with you, the signboxes do look tricky on the face of it, and everyone seems to have a slightly different way of constructing them. As for designing them so that the sign can slide into a slot in the side - I think this makes sense if you're planning on changing them fairly frequently and if the Tardis is going to live inside and away from the elements (afterall, if you put it outside you'll need to seal the sign into the box to stop the rain, which means that handy slot you put in is going to be pretty much redundant). That said, I don't think there's any good reason why the slot method can't be used for a sign that's sealed in place - it's just that it might be a slightly more complicated signbox build. Crispin (Scarfwearer) made some excellent signboxes using this design - there's a good page about it on his website (scroll down when you get there):

I see your point. Ok for someone that is in the early stages of my build how would I secure the signs into the box without cutting a groove such as scarfwearers build?
I have been trying to wrap my mind around this and from the pictures I have seen of Sign Boxes I havent been able to completely figure this out.

i used a thin board attached to the top of the sign box and to the bottom to hold the sign in and then i mounted the front cover. it works, it looks alright but not the best craftmanship and it would also allow water in if it was outside.
hey dematerialiser, have you got it all back together yet? can't wait to see some progress on your build it looks really good

Hi gemini, I guess there are a number of methods depending on how your signbox is constructed; but on mine the front face of the signbox doesn't detach from the rest of the signbox - it's all one unit that slides into the gap in each wall. At this stage I'm planning on using silicon to create a rainproof seal at the front, which will effectively stick the sign in place. But, just to make sure that the sign doesn't move I'll probably use something like a screws with washers to 'pin' the sign in place from the back.
Hi emil, Thanks, I'm filling and sanding all the parts at the moment and yesterday I fitted beading to the interior panelling - I have to finish that today and then I can fill and sand (can't wait until I can stop sanding!). I'm working towards having it all coated in preserver and primer in a week or two's time, but I might post a quick photo of my beading (just because it's been a fiddly time consuming job, but it does finish off the inside quite well too I think)
cheers Chris

Chris,
OMG! I am so very sorry to hear that and I can completely understand your frustration mate. It sounds like you're making the best of it, but nonetheless still quite upsetting. I had a similar problem not to this agree, but my back wall warped a little at the bottom and won't sit flush against my posts. It's not that bad, but definitely was not that way when I initially had her assembled. I would suggest if you have the room, keep your build assembled at all times if possible. Do keep us posted! Your build is still of top quality mate!
Cheers, Jon~
