Exterior Builds

When you decide to actually start building your TARDIS, create yourself a thread here and show us what you're doing! Pictures are welcome. When you finish, go over to the Exterior Gallery, and make a thread over there with some nice photos of your work.

Jon looking fantastic, one thing I might consider changing is your taplight. My dome is made from one as well, but try getting another one to test this with, remove everything but the plastic tap part and use that, not the ring surrounding it. You may already have that in the cards but thought I would mention it. your roof is awesome. Love it.

Jon ol' son
Your roof is brilliant, just brilliant ;D Three steps, fresnel lens, the works. All the agonies behind you, well done.

Thanks everyone! You're all so very kind in your words and support during this build. The roof was a bit of peach :P :-[ :-X :'( :-/, but she turned out quite grand due to the awesome technical support of Crispin and Colin... ;D 8-)
Great mates to say it right!

Karst - I thought when we spoke last that you used the entire dome light, including the housing...Whoops! I will dismantle it tomorrow. I looked all over for a 1/3 wooden dome, no such luck. I'll replace the photo once I change it out. Thanks man!

KB - oh, father dearest...lol... You are a kind man. I appreciate all your support too. You have been a huge help. I am watching the ol' haystack too. I strained it the day I brought the TARDIS up from the basement to the workshop and the one wall panel fell over on my back when I bent over to reach for a deck screw. Boy those walls are heavy... :o The Mrs. Iz was not pleased, especially since I am just over a year out from my back surgery. I had to doctor it up. LOL!

I am seeking opinions on how to light up the Fresnel lamp? The subject is open for discussion.

In the mean time, I am going to start on window frame construction. Signage is not too far off either.

Cheers,
Jon~

Three options come immediately to mind:

Run it off battery. You could buy a battery powered lantern, pull it apart and stick the bulb in your fresnel lens. You'd probably want to put the battery pack inside to make it easy to change batteries.

Run electrical service to your box and stick a regular light bulb in the lens. This is the route I'm taking, I'm planning to install a small electrical panel in my box and have outlets behind the phone door for plugging my car in during the winter.

Solar Power. Purchase a solar power garden light, pull it apart and put the guts in the lens. You'd have to re-do the cap for your lens, but you wouldn't necessarily have to run wires into your box.

Hey Jon, sorry for the confusion on that :P, oh hey for the lamp flasher I was actually thinking of using this

http://www.nfss.com/hfholicooufl.html

I don't know how fast it flashes though but it seems to me that its a quick way to accomplish the effect, extension cord, flasher, bulb. What do you think? Anyone else?

wow i'm so glad to see the roof on top and man what a difference it makes to the overall look... great work bro see looks great. i don't know if this will work for you but on my "dome cap" i got a Styrofoam ball cut a section of it and covered it with paper mache'(sp) for texture glued it down and coated it with emulsion. that flashing light bulb mentioned above works i picked one up at the halloween store, but the flash is pretty fast with a medium pause in between flashes... i'll probably try something else later on, but for a quick fix its ok. once agian your build is fantastic

That looks really nice.

So, did you plan for your TARDIS to fit in your garage fully assembled, or are you just lucky? ;D

Gosh, your build looks familiar - I keep getting flashbacks every time you post up a new picture.

It's looking good, a nice sturdy build and the colour suits it really well too - wonder what it'd look like out in the sunshine.

Why my good man, this build is being constructed off your build plans, as you already know...lol. Solid plans they are! Many thanks too! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I am optimistic that it will show a hint of green... :) ;) :o The colour does look quite good, if I don't say so myself... ;D ;) I just need to apply the filth wash over it and presto a very awesome colour for a fabulous project.

Thanks for all the great comments! I really do appreciate them.

I definitely found the windows to be the fiddliest and most time consuming part of the build. Yours look very similar to the way I did mine; needs plenty of patience, but definitely worth it. Gives it some real strength, and when the wind blew one of of my sides down [when it was standing against the car], the glued in windows didn't budge. I just made sure there was PLENTY of wood glue in the joins. :D

There's something so joyful about seeing your Tardis finished, and seeing mine out in the yard really makes me smile every time I see it.

And weirdly, I can't really believe I've got one now, it's really cool because when i see it, I do just think "Can't believe I made that!"

I suspect you'll be very proud of your build, and rightly so. Enjoy it!

Rox, avadh, atomic, rizla and apprentice - thanks for the comments on the windows.
I am most likely going for the 'TARDIS blue' frames apposed to white frames. I want this build to have both a Met Police Box feel with a touch of TARDIS too.

As for the glass itself, I am going to follow the recommendations of fellow TR2 members, I will pick up some perspex and sand it with a fine grit paper to give it a whitish look. I am basically going to build a square frame around each frame with a 1/4" in height above the frames themselves. I will lay a sheet of perspex and use glazing push points to secure the perspex in place. That is my plan... Any other suggestions are welcome.

I am eager to get the signs in place and have this build complete. Rox, I have to agree, I am already saying to myself, "I can't believe I built this TARDIS"... The satifaction when I see it completed will be priceless and I will be able to better relate to those of you that have completed your wonderful builds.

Cheers,
Jon~

Of course, if you want the double option of white or blue, you could buy some 1mm acrylic in white, cut out the window frames [to the same size as your windows], and slide them into your windows as and when the mood takes you....
