Purple, would you recommend the extra step in the roof like in your build? or the the two step roof in the manual?
By the way, you blue box looks absolutely great. What type of primer did you start with on the bare timber? Would you wait to primer the entire structure once together or prime as you go?
Also, did you mount you corner posts to the base with dowel screws and just drop them into holes for position?
I have to finish my corner posts this weekend and start with the walls next.
Thanks, Jon

Jon, regarding the roof, I can only say go with whatever looks the nicest to you as it makes no real difference. The roof in the manual, technically, is the same as the one on my build, but the first step above the signage is considerably shorter to give it that season 18 look.
As for primer, it's just a bog standard "off the shelf" type that I later covered over with undercoat, so there's nothing that special about it. However, I would recommend that you build everything first, test fit it, then add your primers, undercoats and final finish.
Corner posts. Mine are screwed to the two side walls and don't actually come off, though had I not glued them as well, I could have had them demountable.
I feel that having the posts fixed to the walls makes for a more sturdy end structure. I mentioned this previously, but in the very first image of my build in the "Purple TARDIS" thread, that was only held in together by two bolts and didn't wobble in the slightest! The way the main structure connects to the base is simply 3 pieces of angle iron; both sides and back - with bolts going into the walls.
Hope that makes sense. Good luck with your posts!

Hey everyone, I just wanted to give you all an update. My corner post construction is delayed. I had two deaths in the family 3 days apart.
Thanks, Jon

Hi Everyone, thanks a million times over for thoughts and condolences. You guys/gals are absolute the greatest people I've encountered. I had the last funeral today. My cousin was 45 years old and passed away in her sleep on mother's day. It was a sad day indeed.
Again, thanks for all the support. I am looking forward to spending some time putting more of the 'old girl' together. I have to finish my corner posts. I could really use the diversion at this point.
Talk to you all soon! Jon

I'm sorry for your loss and not commenting on this sooner. When I was just a kid two of my grandparents died shortly one after the other. I wish you and your friends and family well during these times.

Well, we'll do our best to keep you diverted. A mixture of time for reflection and time spent being busy with something else seems to work best in these situations.

Karst and TG -- many thanks on the comments.
As far as the timber goes, it's Southern Yellow Pine Stair Tread. Exactly 1" thick. It's the same timber they use to build home stair cases. It was a tad bit on the expensive side, but well worth it for this project. When my Tardis is complete, I will post a materials build sheet with prices (US) so that new builder have a rough idea on the cost.
For me locally, I could not find 1" MDF. Most of the lumber yards did not recommend it for an out door structure. You should have seen there faces when I showed them what I was building. I laughed, I told him that I thought I was one of kind, but there was a large number of people world wide building these Tardis's.
I am off today, on my list is to finish my corner posts, I will post pics later today or first thing tomorrow.
Good day, Jon

I really liked Purples and Karsts Fresnel lenses. If I could find that company in Seattle I would be appreciative.
I did find a new outside light that would be a good supplement for anyone interested. I guess they discontinued, at least at this site, the Triumph out door lantern. There is a new large and small beacon outside wall light at Menard's.
Heres the link: I tried to paste the link, but the entire address won't fit as a link. I would cut and paste the entire address or go to the root address and search for Beacon Light. Comes in small and large. http://www.menardsonlinecollections.com/....D=1148648778235[/url]

Hey Jon, let me dig through some of my old emails I am bound to find it. I keep them all for occasions like this. I shall post back with the info.
Ok I am back, I found it on the builder guild in an old message from 2004. Here is the info, hopefully it is still current, if not call 411 for that area I am sure they are still around.

Just tell whoever you are talking to you are looking for a marine fresnel lens and ask them what they have, make sure its a full 360 degree lens as there are some half lenses out there too. They should have what you are looking for as it is a shipyard. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Karst, Just got off the phone with Hardware Speciality Co. The sales person wants to know if it's a glass or plastic fresnel lense? I assumed glass, but I was not sure. He is going to check and get back to me later today. If you catch this posting before too long, let me know.
Thanks!

It was / is glass - ask the guy to look right out the back as when Karst and I bought them, he didn't have many left as they were quite old. When mine arrived, it was covered in a thick layer of dust.
Good luck.

Purp - many thanks for posting a reply so quickly. I am waiting for a call back from him. I will ask him to look right out back then. He did tell me that they do make a glass fresnel that measures 5 1/4" height x 5 1/4" diameter. The plastic is more like 6" height x 5 1/2" in diameter, problem is that it has a smoked tint. I like the idea of the glass lense myself.
I let you know how it works out.

A smoked tint may be fine. I recently put a fresnel on my box with a smoked tint, and the consensus here seems to be that it looks OK.

Purple beat me to it, yes both of ours is glass, and were old and covered with dust. I also liked scarfwearers tinted lens, very interesting look. Did you get any leads from them?

Crispin thanks for the opinion. I am going to check out your Tardis build again.
Karst - I did not hear back from Joe from Hardware Speciality Co. I emailed him a pic of yours and purples fresnel lenses.
I'll post a response once I hear back.
Sorry no new pics yet, I have to pick up the quarter round tomorrow. Did not get a chance with the Memorial day weekend. Jon

Hey fellow tardis junkies!
FYI: I got info on those fresnel lenses from Speciality Hardware in Seattle. They have approximately 30-40 of those lenses in stock. They have not sold them in a long time. I'll post pics once I get mine to make sure it's the right one for sure. The price he quoted was $44.00 US. If anyone needs a contact person, his name is Joe - he's on board with the project.
Thanks again Karst for the info. I have been busy at work this past week and I am on call for my group. I hope to finish those bloody corner posts this weekend.

New Pics everyone!
I just finished my corner posts and decided to stand them up on the base to get an idea of big this 'old girl' is going to be!
![[image] [image]](http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h310/jonizdo/Corner%20Posts%20Construction/BaseandPosts1.jpg)
![[image] [image]](http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h310/jonizdo/Corner%20Posts%20Construction/Joninhisunfinishedtardis.jpg)
To show my support of my other half, here a recent pic.
![[image] [image]](http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h310/jonizdo/Misc%20Pics/DSCN1319.jpg)
I am reviewing the Tardis manual on framing for the doors. I am going to have a lot questions regarding making the framing wider on the sides that fit behind the corner posts.
I am not sure how much wider to make them. For example, if the width of the stile is 3.5 inches, how much wider do they need to be on the sides that go behind the corner posts?
Sorry if I am not clear, but I want to mass produce all the parts first.
Help!!
Cheers, Jon

Looking good Jon, I am officially jealous of your garage and also of being at that stage in the build - when you stand those posts up you know it's for real now don't you!?
With the stiles behind posts, I think that it's personal preference so long as you have some (unspecified) minimum amount. On a corner post built as per the maunl there is 4" of space behind the pillar in one direction and then 3 on the other (once you've mount the first wall...) if you go all the way to the corner. Alternatively you could make them 4" each and 45 degree the angles so that they meet - this would be the most visually attractive way to do it on the inside. I was penny-pinching on wood/MDF and designed everything around which measurements I could cut from a whole sheet of MDF and leave minimal wastage - oh the hours spent drawing rectangles within rectangles trying to figure that out!!! In the end I put an overlap of 2" on all of my walls so there is a 2" gap in the corner behind each post where each side meets (or there would be if I didn't have both front and back doors fitted). I *personally* felt that 2" overhang would give me a good bit of room to put screws or bolts through from the back into the posts, staggering them a little so that it coulnd't all break off in one go. It also meant that I could screw through the wall, into the back layer of the post and then every so often right through into the front layer of the posts, giving even greater strength to the posts and mounting the wall as firmly as possible. I think I might have mentioned before that I tend to over-engineer things though...
Yikes, that was a right load of typological jabbering - hope there was something helpful in there somewhere....

( how do I enclose a previous user posted comments in a box?)
Glen,
Thanks for the comments. I welcome all the details. I rather have more than less. It's a guy thing. Speaking of guys things, I appreciate your comments on my garage. It's my cave so to speak -- lol. I want to get a TV out there so I can watch some Dr. Who why working on my Tardis.
I agree about the 2" gap in the corners, makes sense to me. Also, is there a difference in width of the top & bottom styles? I am pretty much using Doc Neal's dimensions for my build ( I needed some reference) and your Tardis Manual for instructions. And, does the top stiles fit underneath or behind the "3-stepped/tier" header?
Thanks again, I welcome comments, suggestion and any piece of advice I can get. So far, the build is going very well in my opinion, especially for someone who has never worked with wood at this level. Patience is the key!
Sorry for all the verbiage..
Cheers, Jon
