Just so that people don't think I'm ignoring you, I'll just say here that I answered these new sets of questions in the PM I just sent to you - I hadn't realised that you'd also said the same thing here.

Hi Jon

Sounds like your build is coming along very nicely! I'm really enjoying seeing it come together so well. (and hope you enjoyed Florida and meeting the DW nutters from Manchester! :D

Also how far do the sign boxes stick out from the corner posts? I am thinking 1.5 or 2" including the thickness of the front sign board with the cut out.

For what it's worth (as I've only gone with what I thought looked best) my signboxes are 2" thick from the corner posts - as I'm going for a slightly chunkier look, with deeper-inset wall/door panels and a thick base.
The original season 18 Tardis signboxes look a bit thinner to me, maybe 1.5".

Mine are 2" but I think they look too chunky. The S18 prop looks to be 1" but they look too flat to my eye. I wish I'd gone with 1.5".

Hey mates! A few more pics to post.

I cut off the top of my plywood sign box cut outs (reference previous pics) and I am left with nice roof supports behind the corner post!

Purp, many thanks on your sketch, it worked like a charm.
Kudos to you!!

Karst - hey man, sorry I haven't been in touch. Work is keeping me busy. I'll drop you a line a day or two. Any progress on your build? Sure can't wait to see it finished. ;)

Cheers,
Jon

PS: Is there any benefit to doing thumb nails on the board? If so, how can I change these pics to thumb nails? I tried the [URL=http//... .jpg[IMG}http:// ....... .jpg[/IMG}[/URL] - no go! :(

Hi Jon,

That's looking really good, your roof supports are identical to the way I did mine and you'll find that having the walls keeping the roof up to be really very sturdy in deed.... I'm also glad that the door drawings worked out well for you too.

As for thumbnails:

Say you want to take one of your pictures from an album in Photobucket, what you do is tick the little box under the picture, then scroll to the bottom of the page and click the grey button that says something like "Generate HTML and IMG Code." You'll then be taken to a new page with loads of code, copy the long thumbnail code and paste it into your thread here and it'll automatically appear as a clickable thumbnail picture.

Try it out. It helps for those of us who aren't on Broadband yet.

Thanks Purp - just edited my last post. Now the pics are all thumb nails. Very nice! :o ;)

I hope to have my doors made today and sign boxes assembled.

Purp/ anyone else - How far do the top of your doors extended behind the headers or are they flush at 78" height? Should I just add the height of my headers (3") to the doors and just make them 81"?

Cheers,
Jon

EDIT: In addition to the above question regarding door height behind the header, I have two additional questions to ask.
1) I have made the chamfers on the hinge stiles for the both doors. In regards to the phone panel, no chamfer is needed. How did you guys cut out the 22 degree chamfer to square it to 90 degrees?

2) Sign box front fascia cut out, how is this approached. Purp, I notice you have a step off inside the cut out, did you do that with a router?
Many thanks!

With the door height, mine extends about half an inch behind the three stepped bar.

The cubby hole on mine still has the 22 degree chamfer, so the panel door surround is also cut to the same angle, but in reverse and this has worked very well for me.

As for the stepped part in my sign boxes, that's just added on aftrwards - I found it to be quicker, easier and neater to do it that way. All it is, is quarter inch (or thereabouts) square beading glued into place.

Right off the top, I could not have gotten this far with out all of you wonderful Time Lords. More specifically, two special thank you's go out to Mr. Blancmange for his excellent rebate design hinge stiles... really the cats meow ;D The second thanks is to Chris (KB) for sending me door hinges and other misc. parts from the U.K. for my build ;D. Purp had offered to help with the hinges as well.... the gesture is well appreciated ;). Kudos to you both, much Karma would be given if I could give you the lot!! ;D ;) 8-)

Okay, moving right along.
I thought I'd get more accomplished today, but here's what I completed today. It seems like I go on these sprints and get a lot done, then there is a 2-3 week stall. Here are some pics:

Took a break from the doors and started my sign boxes as well.

Hope the thumbnails are working better. I'll try to go back through all most post and change them to thumbnails.

Cheers,
Jon

The progress is slow, but I got one door done with a minor problem.

The door at the bottom is bucking the base just about when the door is just about closed. My hinge stile has a little bit of a bow in it as well and is bucking up against the backside of the corner posts.

I am think I should just use a planer and try to make it fit or should I try to move the hinges back? Not sure. Did anyone else run into this problem?

Here are a couple pics:

If you look really careful at the hinge stile above there is a small gap at the top and bottom, but fits very tight in the middle. I know the pic is a tad blurry, at least to me.

Jon,

Just a quick reply here as I'm seriously tired having just arrived here in Detroit... got to say though, the hotel room I'm in is like a small house!

Anyway - the bow in your door - don't fret, just push the whole door in a little, this does mean re-hanging it and setting the hinges back a little, but it'll be okay. I had a bow on one of my doors (the right side one if you look) and I just pushed that back. The only other answer is to completely rebuild the door from non-bowed stock... which is a pain in the bum.

Right - must head off now, the crowds are rowdy outside, there appears to a an "Erotic Dancing" club opposite my room's window... so I get quite an eyeful I can tell you. I can't be fussed with that anyway - I'm too knackered.

Until next time then, bye for now!

Purp.. thanks for the advice!
Glad to hear you made it Stateside safely.
Hope the wedding was good as well. I thought about you guys most of Saturday while I worked on the doors.

I will push the door back as you described. Is there any easier way of making the cut out for the hinges in the framing. I just used a chisel. A bang up job for sure.
As far as remaking the door, I'd rather not. I went through about 20 (2x6's) at the local Lowe's and I picked the best two I could find.

"Erotic Dancing" club - could be interesting...lol. I hope you were able to get some rest.

Take care,
Jon

Hi Jon
Just a thought, I tried to chisel the rebates for the hinges but as I was fixing direct to ply it didn't work. My solution was the electric jig saw, somehow, I got it right, but I don't know how
I also found that the bowing of the door was aleviated by the three hinge method. Robert held the door straight as I drilled and screwed. We did this on the side panels as well and it really notices in the "White" stage of my thread.
I simply couldn't afford to replace and the wood had stood idle outside (Covered up) as I bought all the large panels right at the start. This made for more discount and only one delivery charge.
I'm sure you'll get there my friend
Many thanks

One way to rebate hinges would be with a router. I always wondered why some doors have hinges with rounded corners. Now I think I know why...

I should mention that I don't think I've ever tried using a router for this; I've usually used a chisel, but I've never made a very neat job of it.

Jon,

I can't remember, but is your build going to be a demountable prop? If it is, then you may want to address the bow of the door issue - don't force the door back into shape otherwise you'll never get it to release! Where mine bowed, it made it impossible (nearly) to get the doors off of their hinges again without lots of sweat and swearing.

To get around this, I had to re-hang the hinges to suit the bow... it's not too noticeable, but at least I can completely take the box apart in approximately 15 minutes.

Purp - yes, I am building a demountable prop. I hope to be able to disassemble the prop in 15min if possible, if I need too. I will take you advice and move the hinges back and see if that alleviates the binding of the door.

Chris & Cripsin - thanks for the advice and comments. I will just re-chisel out new rebates, but before I do it, I need to determine the proper hinge position to make the door close without binding.

Thanks fellows!

Hi everyone! :D
It's been a while since I posted anything on my build.
I have had a lot of personal issues going on, so not much progress on my build, until tonight. :-[ :-/ ;D

As above, I tried to move the hinges back to compensate for a bow in my hinge stile, well it did not work.. The bow was just too bad. The 2x6 that I used for the hinge stile was straight as an arrow at Home Depot when I bought it. But, have a couple of days of sitting, it warped. :o

I had to redo the entire door, plywood, new stiles etc. What a job, but the nearly finish product is complete. I decided to wait before I glued the plywood to the stile since I learned the hard way when I tried to salvage the left hand door which I ended up trashing completely. Well, enough said. Here are some pics....

I will mount the plywood to the stiles tomorrow morning after my AM rounds at the hospital.

Cheers all,
Jon

That's looking like a bit of "alright" isn't it? At least you've bitten the bullet and replaced it now, so you won't need to do it again... I take it the bow in the original door was quite bad then. I've still got to trim one of my doors as it still catches on the base when it get warm, but that'll have to be done later.

You're on the homeward stretch now!

Yes, Purp the TARDIS looking like a TARDIS now! Wow. ;D ;D ;D
Home stretch for sure. I am going to fill in and putty all the screw holes on the exterior and then get some primer tinted..... Does anyone have any recommendations on primer brand and colour? Water base or oil?

I am going to disassemble the build and move it to my basement and free up my garage for the winter season. I live in the snow belt, so I need to get my garage freed up. I am shooting to get my sign boxes built this week. The roof, windows, door panel can be done during the winter months in the comfort of the basement...... :D

Here are a few more pics. The cladding/stiles are now mounted to the plywood with a very nice rebate per our Mr/Dr. Purple Blancmange ;)

Hey mates!!!

The TIME has come to prime and paint what I have assembled at this point. Last week we had a small amount of snow, but Buffalo, a city about an hour's time East of me got slammed with 21" of snow.
The garage has to be cleaned out and the build moved to the basement.
I have just primed the TARDIS and here are some pics. She's looking TARDIS'ey now.. More pics of the paint to post later today. ;)

By the way, Season Two is Stateside and I just can't believe Sarah Jane Smith and our beloved K9 made an appearance. She's looking quite good given about 25yrs has gone by.. I wish she would have continued to travel with the good Dr... :'(
This season has a bit of an emotional twist... at least in my opinion..

Cheers,
Jon

glen - hey thanks for your complements :) :)

Thank you again for your manual.... It has been a extraordinary help, along with everyone else in the forum, like: Purp, Karst, Crispin, TG, KB, Colin, Manta, Demat, Mark, Tom, Justin etc..and if I forgot anyone else --- THANK YOU.... ;D

Here is my colour: Cardiff Blue (with minor changes in tint due to it being transfered to an exterior colour from an interior palette.

The colour is quite a bit off in the below pics. Some pics have these bubbles... I am not sure where these bubbles are coming from? I cleaned the lens, but still bubbles... ::)
The blue is a much darker blue.
I want to add the next coat to give it a bit of a weathered look, any suggestions????

I actually love the colour, though for the 2005 box...where did you get this Cardiff blue?

As for Sarah, I loved the episode, and Rob Shearman said it best to me...not even Eccelson could have done what Tennent did in that episode, it was beautiful!

Jon, this is remarkable work and so congratulations, it looks a mighty fine TARDIS to me - top notch build quality and all. Don't worry about the "bubbles" in your pictures, it's not your camera - it's light reflecting off floating dust particles.
