 Willytron's Box
« Thread Started on Feb 6, 2008, 4:59am »

A few weeks ago, I finally decided that it was time to buy some wood. Keep in mind that I am not a carpenter, this is my first time building anything and this is my own design. My methods will differ from most of what I have seen here, but I had already gotten started when I found this site and saw all the great ideas here. Anywho, this is going to be more of an artist's rendition rather than a replica.

wow i didn't realize you had one in the works.... i have often wondered how well it would work to layer the walls in plywood. its looking pretty good though looks like you've got nice clean lines. good luck and keep us updated

Thanks for the vote of confidence. To be honest, I felt like some of the lines on the inset panels on that 3/4" sheet were just a little sloppy. That is why this is going to be the back wall. With each cut i seem to be getting better, so by the time I get to the front it should look presentable. So far I have my lock, some light diffusers for windows, a door handle and pretty much everything except some more screws and paint. This past monday I went and attached the two sheets of plywood together with wood glue and screws driven from the back, however I forgot to take my camera, so no pics of that - I was pleased with the outcome. The completion of that first wall panel gave me an enormous sense of accomplishment!
And here is my basic design. I had other elevations drawn, but the drawings have changed so much over the past year and I only made modifications to this view. Only two dimensions are shown, but the rest is all in my head.

if i can make one sugestion, i think you should do a 3 step under the signs instead of 2. i've built mine with 2 steps under the signs and i regreat doing that now. one of these days i'll go back and add that third step.

Any particular reason? I only ask because I would have to re-think a lot of dimensioning above and below the signs. I have already cut two corner posts at 8'-4" and I have already made one wall panel with 7' fake doors and only 2" above that. I could move the sign up an inch and have the step overhang this wall panel by one inch, but I would really like to have the steps completely attached to the wall. I will consider it, of course I think that the new series prop only has one step. I also realise that this is not the most popular model. . .

Atomicgraph, I took a look at your build photos, and I really like the two step look. I think that It will go better with my roof. If you look at my design, I don't think that my roof has as many stacks as most others. I'm still going to give it some thought. Thanks for the tip. Any input is helpfull.

its just one of the things about my build that bugs me thats all. just one of the things i would have done differently if i were building to day. making these adjustments won't be that hard it just means raising the sign boxes up
no build is the same nor should they be but it is just one of the things i wish i had done when i was building. either way i can't wait to see some more progression on your box

The last time I went to my brother's house to work on it, He wasn't home and the shop was locked. I had to drive all the way home having accomplished nothing! The last couple of chances I have had to go before that it was raining. I really hope that I will get some work done this weekend. Perhaps . . . Saturday. Yes, Saturday is a good day for Tardis building!

I finally got around to doing a couple of hours worth of work on my police box on saturday.

I plan to frame up each wall individually and then attach the walls to each other with metal braces in the inside corners.

I was dissapointed with the shape of the key at first, because it doesn't look like any tardis key ever seen on tv. When my wife saw it, she said,"wow, i'ts got this cool sci-fi looking key!
The more I think about it, the more I like it. It kind of makes it unique. Well, not really unique cause anybody can go out and get one like it, but most people seem to have the yale lock. Just gotta get a chain to put it on.

Are you just doing one side at a time?

EDIT: BTW, where did you find the thumbnail option for Photobucket? ???

Yes, one side at a time. I think that the doors may be next. i'll build 4 walls and a roof. once that is assembled, I can put in a floor later.

When you are looking at your photo album in photobucket, check the little box by the pics you want to make thumbnails for. then go to the bottom of the page and there is an option to create img and html codes. The img code that says "reccomeded for forums or message boards or something like that is the one you want.

Thanks for the photobucket info!

So what will you be using for the corner posts? 4x4s? Or 2x4s with 45° trimmed corners?

the corner posts will be made of 2x4s butted up against 2x6s so that it's roughly 6" on both sides. The 2x6s will be attached to the front and back walls, and the 2x4s will be attached to the side walls. the 2x4s will then be attached to the 2x6s with L-shaped metal brackets in the inside corners. So the corner posts will be split up and attached to the wall panels (as in the 2x6s seen in the above pics. After the box is assembled, I may go back and beef up those corner posts with 1x4s or perhaps 3/4" plywood added to the outside face.

does that make sense?

Sure does. That was the one option I forgot. I wasn't sure what the width of the posts were anyway :P

I haven't seen it done that way, so I hope it works! If it turns out to be troublesome, I'll just take it apart, put the frame together, and then re-attach the wall panels. I hope it don't come to that, I just designed it this way cause I thought it would make it easy to move.

Also, no lights in the sign boxes. Just the 2x6 shown in the pics and it will have a frame made from 3/4" plywood on the front with black and white signs inside that. Due to my lack of experience building things I decided to keep it simple. Also, I already had my mind set on this design before I found tr2 and saw how people were building the sign boxes. It would be cool to have them light up, but it's not important enough to me to go to all that trouble.
As long as the windows light up, that will do just fine. I am planning to paint the inside of the box with black light responsive paint and put some black lights in there. That way, when the door is open the inside will seem to glow. I just thought that this would give it an other-worldly look.

I would recommend putting a thin cover over the corners so it won't look like two boards from the left and right sides. Other than that it should be good'n'sturdy ;)

EDIT: Or maybe the paint would take care of that :P

yeah, i thought about just filling the joints and sanding, but i'm probably going to want to cover it just to thicken up the posts. I'm not sure yet, i'll have to see how it all looks once it's assembled.

My birthday is friday, and my wife said that if I can find that PULL TO OPEN sign on ebay she will order it for me. Does anybody know of anyplace online that I can find such a sign? I'll check ebay tonight, but I don't know if I'll find what I want there. If all else fails I can just have one made, but I'd like to just order it and have it sent to me.
