The problem with those signs is that they aren't the right font or the right size. I think it'd be easier to get the sign made at a sign maker. If you are going for the New Series-style door panel, I have a PDF version available in the oldest thread about the New Series TARDIS.

You are correct. It was originally started by a Xena.

I went today and attached the 2x6s at the top of the frame and the 2x4s at the bottom. I then cut a frame for the sign box from 3/4" plywood.
One wall down, three and a roof to go. There are a lot of sloppy mistakes on this wall, but I suppose it will do for the back.

Not an exact replica, but very tardisy. The window panes are not attached, I just stuck them in for the photos.

They don't really show up in the pics, all you see is that horrible old carpet. The old camp house where these pics were taken was built by my grandparents in 1976, the year I was born. When they died, the land with the camp house on it was left to me. If I ever decide to do a console room, this would be the place to do it.
When I was snapping the pics, the windows looked great in the viewfinder, but as soon as the camera flashed, they seemed to dissapear.

After work, I managed to do a bit of tardis building. I started on the front doors, well actually there is only going to be one door that actually opens. I ripped into a sheet of 3/4" plywood cutting out 8 panels 1'-0" x 1'-4" and I cut the door out. I forgot my camera, so It will be a couple of days before I have pics to show. Next time I'm going to cut the window frames and the door out of the 1/2" plywood back sheet. I'll also have to cut the hole for the lock.

I don't really know, I just figured that I'd probably never open both doors, in my mind I always think of the TARDIS with only one door open. So, I figured that it would be less cutting.

In the end, it will probably have a few lines that look a bit sloppy. The great thing about building a tardis is that it is supposed to look old and beat up. I can't compete with the likes of purple, or anyone else here for that matter, but for a first attempt at carpentry - I must say i'm quite pleased.

There's no reason to think that your build should compare to (or compete with) anyone else's - it's a terrific start and one you should be proud of.

You're right to be pleased with your efforts though. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the comment. I'm not here for competition, I'm just giving credit where credit is due. I probably should say it under your thread, but your box is looking AWESOME!

Thanks, Ex! It'll be the only one in my town, possibly the only one in my state. There is, however a red phone box in front of a restaurant in my town. I'll take some pics and post them some time. (its actually quite pink now, but when I was a kid it was bright red)

awesome! your moving right along with this its looking great. i wouldn't worry to much about any un even lines they could be covered with wood filler or sanded away or covered if you add any texture to it, besides i think things like that add caracter to a box

I had a pretty productive weekend. I was determined to have doors with the lock installed by the end of the weekend.

My door frame broke, it was only one inch wide across the top. Once it is all framed up, it shouldn't be a problem.
I messed up my lock by driving the screws in too far, as the door wasn't thick enough. This left two little bumps on the front plate of the lock cylinder.
So, I made a mad dash to Lowe's. A replacement cylinder was only five dollars. I also grabbed up some screws, nails, a hammer and a door handle for the inside.
Rather than buying another sheet of plywood to thicken up the door (I've spent quite a bit of money on wood already) I just used scraps that came from one of the recessed door panels in the position of the lock

The windows look better on the back wall than they do on the front doors ( the MOST IMPORTANT WINDOWS ON THE WHOLE DAMN BOX!) No worries, a bit of sanding should help there.
I made no attempts to make the inside of the door look good, I really don't care much about the appearance of the interior.

Thanks very much. :) After dealing with the doors, the side walls should be relatively easy. Now that the days are getting longer, this project is progressing much faster.

After work, I started on the frame for the front doors, and got the door on it's hinges. I ran out of daylight before I could finish the frame. But I did get all the trim for the front cut out.

The whole front wall, doors and everything is only being held together by one 2x6 across the top. I gotta get over there after work today and finish that frame up - looks like rain outside, I hope it holds off long enough...

I finished framing up the front wall, and the damn door wouldn't open! So, after much sanding and a little adjustment of the lock position, it works just fine. When I lay the wall face down, the door swings out about a quarter of an inch. This will be corrected when The door stop, the steps under the sign box and the rest of the trim is in place. I'll also have two out of four walls done at that point, meaning I'm almost half way done!
Yippee!

you've gotta be getting excited now. i use a board across the back of my doors to keep them together when it comes apart it helps from breaking the door frame (which i've almost done on several occasions) keep it up shes really looking good!

ps the same thing happened to me with the lock and the screws being to long :(

When you say you used a board across the back of the doors, do you mean when the box is dissasemled?

Did you have to thicken up your door to make the lock work?

And yes, I'm very excited. I've accomplished more in the past five days than I did in the first three months!
