TARDIS Plans and general dims tips
« Thread Started on Jun 5, 2007, 11:01am »

Lots of people are asking about where to find plans for their replica builds, so here are a few pointers to get you started.

Your first port of call should be to:
http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/~trekker/policeboxes/home.html
Look under the Replicas banner and you will find a link to the Builders Workshop Manual - this will prepare you far the start of your project.

If you want to build the current 2005 to Present TARDIS, please look at this fellow member Bill Rudloff's drawings. They are at 1:12 scale, just measure up and times by 12 to get the full sizes... these are very close to the actual prop.
http://www.geocities.com/doctorwho8_a/NewTARDISfront.pdf
and
http://www.geocities.com/doctorwho8_a/NewTARDISsides.pdf

For all other TARDISes, there is a general rule of thumb that goes like this:

Door / wall heights: 6'6"
Door width: 18" approx
Centre door divide width: 2"
Corner post widths: 6"
Sign box lintel height: 6"
Window / panel height: 15"
Window / panel width: 12"
Base height: 3" to 4"
Base width: 52" to 53"

The rest you can work out at your discression and choose your dims to your own liking, but this should get you started. There are many threads scattered around the TARDIS Shells section that will aid you in your research.

If you get stuck, just shout out and someone will give you a helping hand.

Good luck and happy building.

Also.... there are some freely published builders' plans on the old Tardis Builders guild website. Here is a link to some of them:

http://groups.msn.com/TheTARDISbuildersGuild/tardisplans.msnw

My tip to any would be builder would be to take some plans or measurements as a starting point and then modify to your liking. And there is an excellent free program called Google Sketchup with which you could build your design in 3d and then view it from from every angle before committing yourself. I would definitely recommend doing that (See Dematerialiser's thread)

there are no be-all/end-all plans for each type of TARDIS yet though as you can tell from the finished products most people have managed to find something close enough for them and figure out the gaps as they went. Someone may well pop up with some plans to offer you but in the meantime, have a look around the TARDIS Shells back-catalogue of messages, poke around the old Tardis Builders Guild Site on MSN and tell us a bit more about what you'd like to build.

Cheers, glen

My only thoughts are these,

1 If you're stuck with a problem measurement on your build, just ask the fine folks here - a problem shared....

2 Never pay for any plans or blueprints. Apart from the legal aspects, how are you to know if they are going to actually be any good?

3 Lastly, if you are happy with the look of your build and measurements, then it's right ;D

And if you are using wood make sure it is STRAIGHT! Just completed my base and I measured 4 times and cut once Still a tad off due to a slight curve in the wood. Close but not exact.

Oh yeah...totally forgot that one! I got most of my wood at Lowes, and let me tell you, most of it was curved *ever so slightly*. I could fix most slight curves by drilling more screws closer together, but...it really is something to keep in mind when buying pine.

They're on here somewhere, I posted them a few years ago but things have moved around a bit since then.

I suppose you could take the normal precautions against an atomic blast. Sticky tape on the windows and that sort of thing.

Does anyone know how accurate the dimensions and measurements are on this Department Six print of the NST?

Completely different accents. They're like "where's the car?" and we're like "where's the car?".

so i know for legal reasons we can't go around asking for plans to the 2005 box, and the links on the first post are no longer active (i'm guessing for the same reasons). and the last thing i want to do is stir up trouble or make anyone mad at me...so yeah... =/

Actually, the reason my links aren't working is because Yahoo closed Geocities and they are supposed to convert my Geocities space to a Yahoo space. I'm still waiting for things to transfer. Should have taken 3 days, but it's been 5. You can PM me or email me for the PDFs.

You can try using this Sketchup as a plan with the dimension tool;

It's unfinished but all the relevant dims are here;

It's a nice try, but where did you get the dimensions? The panel bevelling is a little out and there is no phone panel.
Check this one out-
