 Iconic Replicas TARDIS Console
« Thread Started on Sept 6, 2007, 6:22pm »

Hello all, just popping in to say my latest project is go, and that a couple of pictures are up on the IR workbench gallery:

http://www.productenterprise.com/ir/workbench.html

It's going to be the Hartnell version, be in 1/6th scale like the Police Box, and will have lights, and maybe I'll make the column rise and fall, if I can work out a mechanism!

Hopefully, more pics soon!

Hi Archie, this is a nice start to the console.
As to the colour, well I'm sure you could colour match it to a 1960's BBC paint chart.
I believe they had a colour palette for black & white TV. But I'm sure you know this already.
You are a very talented man! Now go and finish it!!!

Busy, busy, busy!

Here's a pic of the central column:

Still needs the four Flourescent tubes on the outer cage, but I'll be custom making some in frosted 4mm acrylic rod, with a 3mm white LED in each end.

Now working on all the switches and lights and everything else!

PS: It's mainly made out of 2mm, 4mm and 6mm perspex, with sheet styrene for the less structural parts, with a 4" acrylic tube for the column, and a lot of acrylic rod!

That's a beauty. Needless to say we've had tons of discussions about exactly how the original column was laid out during the early years. This looks very close so far. BTW, hows the final prototype for the original TARDIS looking?

That is absolutely beautiful :) If I can persuade the missus, then I would love to buy that! (I'm not normaly one for these sort of collectibles... But the Hartnell TARDIS/ Console Combo would be awesome. :)

BTW: When I was reasearching this, I discovered that originally (before they started messing with it and breaking it) that the black and white flags at the top form a black arrow pointing up on one side and down on the other.

Have you included the clear cube above the dumbell? Also I put nine struts on the static part (and then only 3 tube lamps)

Here are some of my images as I built up the column...

Here's a larger version of my avatar... (The whole thing is moving a bit quickly, and the flags are wrong on one side...)

Again, I'd just like to say that your work on this is incredible!!! :)

Thanks for the praise, and the feedback: Especially to rassilonsrod- I've duly noted your comments and research, and will be incorporating it into some amendments to the column!

Looking awesome there :) I didn't see that pic last night!

Are you going to put any "metal" cladding on the bottom? and also every other "door" around the plinth is black. Also, is the light shining off the edge, It became silver during Jon Pertwee's Season 8, it was the same green before that.

I am amazed at the detail you have brought to this model! It is just incredible!!

As ever, Rassilonsrod, your comments have been noted- the edges will go back to the green colour, and I'll have to source some fake aluminium channel for the base, and still have to paint the alternate black panels!

While I'm here, any idea what the highlighted items in this picture are?

I had an idea... But its the wrong panel for that. (Behind on on one of the 3 dark panels on the plinth is a complicated circuit looking thing.) Instead I have a clearer image for you.
[image] click

I wonder if in an FX sense, they might have been buttons to activate the radiation meter or lights or something?

Also, an apology. Its not green until the pertwee era, its a sort of off white. I hope I get this to you in time!

Here's a pic from the first Troughton story showing the metal edging on the base. It also shows one of the underside controls.
Hope that helps you Archie

Those handles were put on roughty about the time they had to hold on to the console when they were ejecting Salamander. Not sure exactly when, but def weren't there in the beginning.

Thanks everybody! all really useful!

While I'm here, it's occurred to me whilst making this model, that the central column is based on the most high-tech thing you could get in the early sixties (bar the transistor)- ITS A GIANT ELECTRIC VALVE! Anyone else see this, or is it just me?
