Police Public Call Box

So, this is where the TARDIS design stemmed from; a piece of street furniture from way back when. Talk about them and post up your photos here.

 Coventry Box Restoration
« Thread Started on Jul 31, 2005, 1:51pm »

Well I did the 1 3/4 hour drive down to Coventry yesterday to check out the logistics of removing the box from it's present home.

The box is pretty poorly but considering it's age, it's not as bad as I imagined.

My plan is to remove the two roof sections and then split the four wall sections.

I don't think transporting whole is an option. :-/

I've brought the roof lamp with me so I can make a start, boy it's heavy :o.

I gave the lamp a clean and have possibly found some replacement mesh.

I never realised there were no fresnel rings on the Mk. lens! I do like the opening lid (not found on Met boxes) making bulb replacement easier.

Once I've fully striped it I'll get it sand blasted before rust preventing.

Kind of you to say Ironage.

Off back to Coventry Saturday.

This time I'm hoping to remove all the easy bits, door, desk and windows etc. so that the last visit should be straight forward.

Out of curiosity, does anybody have any pictures of the Avoncroft box they wouldn't mind sharing?

Well the last visit didn't even happen!

Mainly because of personal matters that needed attending to but also the weather was far too wet to safely dismantel the box.

I'm definately off down there this Sunday to collect it, no matter what!

Well it finally happened, the Coventry Police Box is no longer in Coventry ;D

I was suprised the weather stayed fine, but after 1 3/4 hour drive there, 3 1/2 hours dismantling and 1 3/4 return journey, the box is now in Sheffield (still in the van as I couldn't be bothered to unpack!) ready for some restoration work!

The actual dismantling process didn't go as smoothly as I had hoped, but looking back I think it went as smoothly as it possibly could.

There will be some pictures to follow as soon as I get them uploaded.

For now, I'm off for a well needed bath (damn roof felt >:() and a relax!
