 Dave's Long Eaton Model
« Thread Started on May 1, 2008, 11:05pm »

Here's the progress so far on my 1mm card scale model. Rather than paste pics (which I'd have to figure out how to do), you can see/marvel/laugh/criticise my progress here.

http://www.spacewarp.co.uk

I don't care, I'm gonna have a model police box, and it'll be bigger than my son's Flight Control Tardis! ;D

That's looking brilliant!! Loving the detailed build diary for your model, and the attention to detail is superb. Hpe you'll keep the diary updated as you go - and you can get a flasher and white LED for the lamp from Maplins (dot co dot uk) - but it's a build it yourself circuit.

http://www.spacewarp.co.uk has been updated.

(Yes I know what time it is. My 5-yr old daughter likes Dr Who but jabbers loudly all through it, so now we record it quietly in the background, then all watch it at 7:30 when she's gone to bed!)

Wow thats looking just great.
Nice attention to detail and the build diary is fantastic.

Some blue paint and it will look even better I remember my mine looking O. K. then add the blue undercoat an voila a TARDIS.

I'm off to paint some more on mine now seeing as its a nice night.

Thanks for the comments!

Sorry my html isn't up to much, so you have to scroll through all the preceding pages to get to the latest. However if you check the properties of a page or two you'll quickly see how to bookmark the last page.

Have started on the lamp assembly using (of all things) a cotton bud, and one of those plastic things you cover screw heads with on furniture.

I've also just printed out on laser acetate the roof signs & phone sign, but they'll go on after I've painted.

Hey ho, time to let the PVA dry & hope nothing droops! :-/

I'm going down the pub tonight so will be keeping well away from any paint and brushes when I get back (no matter how drunkenly confident I feel). Probably start on the lamp on Friday.

Wow, a lovely model :D
and such a great build diary

I'm interested in your signs - I know there are different variations but what made you choose Available rather than Obtainable on the phone panel? and where did you get the reference for the top sign?

Arghh!!! Quite simply a mistake. I typed it out myself and obviously didn't notice what I'd written until you pointed it out. Damn!

I actually found the top sign on a site, quite possibly this one, and just copied the jpg.

Oh yes, I love an original box (we used to have one at the bottom of my road in London when I was a kiddie). I drool over the prop in the Cushing films, it's so dark and sinister!

If any more Met-fans are reading this, what do you reckon for the lamp assembly? Black or the same blue as the box? I'm in two minds to be honest (blue would be easier).

I'm pleased everyone likes it, though I'm disappointed with the bowing of the card. I will definitely do another one after this, probably with thicker (2mm) card, and possibly a bit larger.

Sorry no updates today though, I've had beer. ;D

Hi Dave
Meant to answer you earlier, blue, not black, lamp housing. Didn't need to in the end. This is the "Blue paint moment" we've all enjoyed. Heading for the finish line now. One thing, St. John's Ambulance badge?

Yeah I looked around some colour photos and figured although I'd prefer black (like my previous model) I could live with blue, and it would sure be easier to paint!

St Johns...ummed and ahhed about this for a while, but although I like the Cushing box and that has one, I felt this was really a model of my sort of "ideal" TARDIS, like an improved version from the Troughton era (when I was 6). Also the one near our house didn't have one.

http://www.spacewarp.co.uk

Have put an update link to the latest page on the first page.

I have now run out of paint, so things will be on hiatus for a few days while I wait for another pot to be delivered. The shop I originally bought it from has closed down, but luckily eBay came through...as usual.

I realise it isn't going to have a Matt finish, but I like the Royal Blue colour, and I don't think it was available in Matt.

Anyway Matt paint scuffs & picks up finger-marks (unless you varnish it...which rather negates the point of using Matt paint in the first place), and I like a nice shiny TARDIS.

I think you'll find solace in that some Police Boxes did have a gloss or semi-gloss finish to themm.

Hmmm...yes. I think next time I may try for a matt finish. There's gloss and then there's it's-so-shiny-you-can't-make-out-detail.

See more updates in the never-ending saga of Dave's TARDIS!

Blackwall Box, or a Brachaki box, or maybe both. Not sure which first, but I can decide later (since it's really only the roof and the central door bit that's different). I've bought some flat red and flat blue paint for both.

I didn't in the end because this was really only a "proof of concept" build, and quite frankly I was impatient to finish it!

Also the problem with a flashing light is that if you glue it in and the bulb goes, it's duff. That happened with my first model back in the 80s.

EDIT: Handles done.
