I initially just used diffusers for suspended ceiling strip lights. They come in 2'x4' sheets in places like Home Depot or Lowes for $5-$10 each. They also have a variety of textures, including a white one much like the new series windows. I haven't found them in the UK though - anyone know of a source?
For the makeover, I used acrylic window 'safety' glass, also from Home Depot, and frosted it using an orbital sander (in a few minutes). That stuff is quite a bit more expensive though. For the pebbled glass, I used hammered-effect glass from Spectrum Glass. I bought it online, but you could probably find a glass/glazing shop around that would order it for you.
