My boyfriend and I are building an 18th season Tardis using Autocad and a Pacer CNC machine. I made a test shot of a window yesterday and the results are amazing.
I've used the dims at the top of this thread plus recent photos of the Yardley Jones box at the BBC television center, blowing up images to the right scale and using calipers to confirm measurements.
Problem is I'm getting measurements of 11.75 for the windows/frames and not 12.00 inches as stated in the dims. If this is the case and the center strip is 2 inches as stated this would mean measurements of 2.75 and 2.5 either side of the panels/windows - the images aren't clear enough for me to confirm this though.
Can anyone give me a nudge in the right direction? I really want create something that's Cod steaks accurate...

From what I've seen (and 3D models I have built), I think the centre strip is more like 1.25 inches in width (or apparently 1.5 for the new series box). I'm pretty sure that 2 inches is too wide.
Unfortunately I haven't got round to trying to model the Season 18 model yet, but I believe it's more similar to the original box than anything else, and that one has 12 inch windows and a 1.25 inch divide as far as I am aware.
The general arrangement dimensions that you refer to are fairly generic and are there as a simple guide so that members can jiggle the numbers around to suit their needs, without us having to spell out the designs for each variation.
In terms of your quarter scale build, we're only speaking of a 1/32" difference between the two sizes you mention, so I doubt it'd be that obvious when looking at the whole model in context.
On the season 18 box, the first thing that you have to keep in mind is that the wall sizes are very slightly different to the door sizes - this is just a result of human error when the prop was originally built, plus you can factor in that fibre glass of that period tended to shrink by a fair amount - the door side window widths are actually 11 7/8", though off hand I can't remember if the wall side windows are bigger or smaller.
I wouldn't worry about the Cod Steaks model being 100% accurate, it isn't. A lot of the numbers were rounded up or down to make the scaling build factor easier... in this sense then, neither the signage, roof or corner posts are exactly 5 times smaller than they should be - but it still looks very accurate.
Hopefully this has answered your questions, without muddying the issue further.
