As my TARDIS is going to live outside I’ve been looking into fitting a solar light in the lamp. I found a solar garden light with a nice curved top that I took apart and put on the lens – but maybe it’s not curved enough?
The nice thing about solar lights, apart from being free to run and that they automatically switch on every evening, is that the bulb is tiny, LED size, leaving room for a normal bulb too if you want one.
This may appear that I’m building from the top down - but it’s just that my woodwork isn’t quite ready for inspection Not quite Mackenzie Trench – but do you think it will look OK??
I think what you've got there looks just right, you don't want the top cap to curve too much or it'll start to look top heavy. Nice lens there too, even though that is more accurate, I went for one with extra Fresnels on them - just because I wanted to go down the Uber TARDIS route.
I really am looking forward to seeing how your TARDIS / Police Box progresses!
The lens is from a ships chandler – as suggested in the FAQ section on this site. The top curved bit is from a solar lamp below (£6, ASDA) The top ring is a compressed foam float from a pond fountain (I borrowed it because it looked the right shape and when I went back – the fountain had sunk…oops) And it’s sitting on last nights Doctor Who tape… TG
OK - Been net surfing again and found the IDEAL - it seems source for fresnel lamp toppers ! These guys will make whatever size/height you need in clear or white acrylic. Their sample pics section even shows the ideal topper complete with lip/flange !
Saves all that trotting round looking in all manner of stores for correct-ish size lids etc !
Im giving them a shout ! Will let you know what transpires.
Should look good atop my blue glass fresnel - - ANYWAY, site address below -
They do don’t they Teletran, they flash on and off at dusk too, it’s great. It was the flashing that made me think TARDIS.
Banzai – As you say, there are no real details on the marinestore website so I bought the lens on trust really. They are glass and quite heavy so I would expect it to be prohibitively expensive to ship to the US. Dimensions are: height just under 5”, external diameter 6.5” Possibly slightly small but I’m happy with the proportions.
Right - follow up to my post re the lamp toppers - Got a VERY fast reply back and a quote for the whole thing in half inch thick acrylic of $39.95 plus shipping ! Im ordering two so that I wont be at home to Mr. Cockup once I start drilling and fiddling - -
My lense is 5 and 1/2 dia and Im basing my topper dims on Met. lamp pics far as I can see the outer flange is 1 inch and the rods are quite tight in on the sample Ive got a piccy of - and I like it !
Now, I picked up my lens on Ebay - its marked 'corning' who made railroad etc lantern lenses here in the US so they are rather collectable - HOWEVER mine is over the standard Railroad dims at 5 and half dia. hence reson I got it for about $19 !! They made 'em in red and white also. And as I keep telling everyone its blue - ( theres a pic I posted over on the old group )- now all I need is a disco spinner light to shove inside and Im Mr.Happy !! All I need is a dark night a screwdriver and a sleepy Fredericksburg Officer of the lawah parked in the block - -
TARDIS itself arrives on Aug 2nd - - now, did I remember to set the HADS, hmmph? O dear o dear -
Notice in my Avatar Im holding my patent Tardis Roof Lamp For The Mounting Of Grapple Mk. II - ex. Met Police and a bargian too - - - will also duly post the apparently customary Planets Funniest Animals pics of cats and dogs widdling up the side of said Tardis once I get it. Imagine their suprise if I do actaully remember to set the H.A.D.S. - - -
To put pictures up, just upload the image somewhere like Photo Bucket and insert:

into your message. See also our FAQ here and here.
Oh, and there's also a top sign PDF on my site. Neither of them are particularly authentic though. It's probably about time someone made up some better ones for general use based on the information that's available...
OK - My acrylic molding arrived today for my lamp topper/cap - and Im well pleased ! Nicely vac-formed in REALLY thick 1/2 inch acrylic - -
The second ( blueish ) piece - 1/4 inch thick - beneath is for drilling the top-to-bottom rods through, the top will then hide holes. The bottom disc serves the same purpose - the whole thing sits atop the lamp base block from my TPE Tardis. I think its going to work !
ALSO note US Bell system phone I grabbed for $9 off Ebay ! Now I need a scan off a blank British dial centre that I can reletter - ( please anyone - better if its old - )think I want it to be lettered Walmington On Sea - - ! No prizes for guessing the series - -
Images attatched for viewing pleasure - as usual - -

Where DID you find that ?? Have a real one about the house or on the internet ?? And one of those Type-writer antiquey-things ?
THATS what Im after !!!! Now all I need is ye numbers changed to 333 ( If memory serves either the number of the bank, or Village Hall in Dads Army - if you hadnt guessed the location of my box already !! Jonesey I know was just ' Jack Jones the Butchers" everytime he answered the phone - usually to Mrs. Bluitt - digress, digress - - )
The internal phonebox is on my list after the windowglass arrives, I redid the 'to call police ' internal sign for ' Walmington P.S. '! ) which I think will go inside in a small frame as did all the notices in telephone kiosks to remain ' vandal proof '.
I also picked up an Air Raid Wardens helmet to hang up inside too - -
Emergency procedures: 'Put two pennies in the slot - Ask for Walmington 333 - Press Button A'! Just a photo of a real dial insert. It prints from Photoshop at correct size but if you need me to change size, just let me know. TG
