Hi all,
This question is about the colour of the 'POLICE public call BOX' signs over the windows of the third Doctor Tardis. I can see in the photos that the front text is black on grey, and the sides the old white text on black. But do any of you know the colour of the box on the back? I'm guessing it is black on grey like the front.
Thanks Dave

The text was dark on light on the back - same as the front.. There's a picture of the back and left taken during Planet of the Spiders which shows this clearly. The left sign box was apparently empty in the later years. There's some argument about how the dark on light effect was achieved for the front and back signs: was it black on frosted glass, or transparent (and dark behind) with a frosted background. Or something else? There are various opinions...

In Ark in Space, you can see the side signs are clear transparent with white writing, but the front (and presumably the back) are translucent/foggy but with black printing. I tried to emphasize the light reflection on the left where you can see POLICE in reverse on the wall. Bill Rudloff Attachments:

Thank you both for your help, that is great. The version I'm making is the one from Planet of the Spiders, so that really helps. Scarfwearer. When you say an empty box, was it actually empty or just plain glass with no text? Was it empty at the time of PotS? DoctorWho8Thanks for the great photos. It really helps to see the back of the prop and the window frame damage which I will copy. I was going to paint the window glass a dirty matt grey, but in the photo the damaged window looks white. Would you say that is the case, or is it just reflection? Dave

Having viewed the photo of the side and back provided by DoctorWho8 I made the following changes this morning. The base was widened to provide a more pronounced lip at the side and the two kick plates at the bottom of the side were added.

When you say an empty box, was it actually empty or just plain glass with no text? Was it empty at the time of PotS? I'm sure your guess is as good as mine. From the picture Bill posted above (which was from PotS) there's no obvious cavity behind it, so perhaps they stuck a piece of hardboard in there if the sign broke previously.

It just looks grey and dirty doesn't it. Almost like the window glass or the front/back text boxes, but without the black text.

Here's a picture that shows the left sign box a bit better. Also you can see better how the wall is not straight - the roof's on as it's supposed to be, but the wall slopes in. This is why there are two roof hinges on the right, but only one on the left side here in the middle where the edge of the roof crosses the edge of the wall. That back left post is a good inch smaller than it should be by this point, and the corner quadrant is gone on both left hand posts.

Dave I think it's the lighting and the B&W photo itself. It's probably the same color as the left side windows in the Pertwee pic. Bill Rudloff

Bill Rudloff I think so too Bill, although for the moment I have left that window in the plain (milk bottle) plastic. I may paint it before the build is finished. This is how it looks so far. Any of you know the height and diameter of the real lamp tube used on the prop at this time? It looks like it has black tape around the top.

8 in. tall X 7 in. wide seems to be the accepted size of the light tube of the 1966 refit based on both Tony Farrell's and Scarfwearer's plans. Bill Rudloff
